The name “sacred bark” dates back to the 17th century, when it was bestowed on this tree by Spanish and Mexican explorers. Apparently, they were intrigued by the American Indians use of the Bark for a wide variety of medicinal purposes. It’s most important use, however, was as a remedy for constipation for upset stomachs.

Cascara Sagrada contains organic plant compounds called anthraquinones that have powerful laxative effects.

Since the 1890s, Cascara Sagrada has been used on the U.S. Pharmacopeia, which contains standards for medications and supplements. It’s received initial approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use as an over the counter laxative.

Cascara Sagrada is an excellent remedy for chronic constipation.

Cascara Sagrada is very invigorating to the body despite its bitter taste.

Cascara Sagrada is not considered to be habit forming, as it cleanses and restores natural tone to the colon.

CasCara Sagrada improves a sluggish colon that is chronically constipated, by improving the flow of secretions of the stomach, liver and pancreas.

Additional health benefits:

Stimulant laxative ( Cascara works by causing muscle contractions in the intestines. These muscle contractions help move stool through the bowels. The bark contains chemicals called antroquinones that give it it’s color and laxative effect.)

Liver Health ( This herb contains a compound called emodin, which was protective against induced liver damage in rats.

In the study, rats with acetaminophen-induced liver damage experienced some liver protection after treatment with emodin.)

Cancer preventive ( A study was investigated with the anti-cancer effects of aloe-emodin, a component of Cascara, on human liver cancer cell lines. The compound was found to stop cancer cell proliferation and even induce cancer cell death. The study concludes by stating that Cascara might be useful in preventing cancer.)

Digestive Health ( Cascara is classified as a bitter herb and a tonic for the digestive system. Herbal bitters cause the “bitter reflex”. Which begins a cascade of actions in the body to prepare the digestive system for food.)

Parasites ( The Cascara bark tree is also rich in a compound called emodin, which is known to be antifungal and antimicrobial. This supports its traditional use for expelling parasites; however it has also been found to be effective against a range of bad bacteria including; Helicobacter pylon, E coli, and several strains of Staphylococcus aureus. It has also demonstrated antifungal action against Candida.)

Cascara Sagrada combined with psyllium husk are two of the most widely used remedies in colon cleansing programs. Psyllium is characterized as a bulk laxative-it’s mucilaginous component acts as a bulking agent that cleanses the intestines. The active compound of Cascara Sagrada stimulate the intestinal lining and relieve a sluggish colon.

Gallbladder issues ( Cascara has effective benefits for the Gallbladder ducts and helps the body rid itself of gallstones and also increases the flow of bile.)

Hemorrhoids ( Cascara has been useful in the treatment for Hemorrhoids by being non- irritating and forming a soft stool allowing painless passage. )

Atomic nervous system ( Cascara has been reported to excite the Atomic nervous system, in which this is the way it works. The stimulation of the atomic nervous system increases peristaltic action. The worm like movement of muscle in the large intestine is referred to as peristaltic.)

Constipation ( Cascara has been used for the relief of constipation and hemorrhoids and has a rectoanal postoperative treatment. )
